6 ways to instantly upgrade your Winter style

Winter is officially upon us and living in New York City for almost 20 years, I know waking up in the frigid temps is hard enough let alone thinking about what the heck to wear.

And as a guy, it’s easier to just go for function over fashion. For the most part, you’re just thinking about keeping warm!

However, I want you to consider that choosing what to wear is one of the most important marketing decisions you make each day; not just because it’s the first thing others notice, but because it impacts how you feel about yourself—and that informs how you operate out in the world.

So, here are my style recommendations on how you can instantly upgrade your Winter staples this season. I’ve listed 6 style swaps that are functional and stylish enough to carry you through the rest of the Winter season…

The Sweatshirt

Swap out the baggy, college hoodie for a more stylish bomber style. Dressy enough for work, casual enough for the weekend.

The Puffer Jacket

Swap out the “too puffy” puffer for a more sleeker, sophisticated style. Brands have updated the puffer style which looks great for both work or weekend wear.

The Colored Bottom

Swap out your “basic” pair for another neutral color pair. Try a complementary color on the bottom to break up the head to toe navy look.

The Winter Boot

Swap out the outdated hiking boot for a more elevated boot style. Look for a pair that is both functional and fashionable enough to wear even when the weather is great.

The Sweater

Swap out the boxy, boring sweater for a more fitted cardigan style. Layer it over a button down for a business casual look or a t-shirt for the weekend.

The Scarf

Swap out the same old boring black or grey for a pop of color or a pattern instead. Instantly upgrade your look with a pop of color to make your dark winter coat seem less boring.

When you take control of your image, you don’t just look better, you feel better. And, what shines through isn’t the clothes, but the powerful man beneath them.

Client Success Story: The power of your image

Do you feel the way you dress, the way you “show” up, is a direct correlation to how you view yourself?

This is what I call the power of your image.

However, if you’re anything like my client, Danny, you may not be aware of it. But instead of me explaining it for him, I’d rather let Danny share his story in his own words. Here’s what he had to say…

What challenges did you face before we started working together?

“In a leadership course it was brought to my attention that my wardrobe was not a representation for what I am building professionally or my position as President & CEO of my catering and events company. On the personal side I was attracting a variety of women, but not what I was ultimately looking for to have a long term committed relationship.”

What helped you in our work together?

“On the styling side, going through my wardrobe showing me how the sizes I wore were too big making me look bigger than I am. Showing me styles and fits that compliment my body and those that do not. I pride myself on taking care of my clothes and while having clothes well taken care of was admirable, Tavia reviewed how those clothes were also dating me. I eliminated 95% of my outdated items. I also appreciated the service to shop with me to learn what looks good and not. Last, Tavia giving me the heads up on discounts or sample sales is really great.

On the personal side, we would talk about dating situations and how women think. The women I was attracting and whether I was clear on what I was looking for in a partner. Tavia gave me a great exercise to find focus on the type of woman I was looking to meet.”

What were your results?

“Professionally, after having Tavia style me, there is an attention and consideration wherever I go now. I never expected or wanted it beyond representing my company to get prime opportunities. My experiences range from getting prime parking without charge, doors held open, being told I must be an elected official, going into stores and being serviced right away even if there are lines, bumped into front as a walk-in for my daughter to see her doctor.

Staff, family, friends, people I know or new ones saying I look 35-45, I’m 55 years old! I’m told they like the new me although I don’t feel different, but I do look different. Over and over I’m noticed. It’s regular at this point. I’ve been stopped at conferences by people who want to know who I am and what I need. I’ve always been friendly and approachable, but the new attention is over the top. I have been asked to be a Gala Co-Chairman. I went to an event and was told by others my age that I keep looking younger.

Personally, after doing Tavia’s exercises, I refocused to not entertain women I knew were not what I wanted or who did not want what I did. Within a week or so I connected with 2 women who matched my ideal. One of them I really connected with and chose to pursue to start a long term, committed relationship with. Amazing how that worked. She says she loves the person I am and she enjoys my style as well, lol.”

Regardless of your age, position, or industry, you have a unique opportunity to stand out.

You have the power to choose how you represent yourself and your company.  By changing the way you dress, you “show up” differently and you get different results:

  • Increase your job performance and get promoted.
  • Increase your sales and close more deals.
  • Increase your odds in dating and get better matches.

Dressing a certain way has most definitely landed me more jobs, clients, and bigger opportunities. The question is, do you want to stand out or hide out?

Conquer your casual style this Fall

Fall is my favorite season here in NYC!

I just got back from sunny San Diego where the 70 degree weather is a bit like groundhog day (no complaints) but let’s be honest, apple cider and pumpkin spice lattes just don’t quite mix with the California weather.

Something about the crisp air here on the east coast, not only do I love this kind of weather but because I also love helping my clients update their Fall wardrobes.

And with office dress codes becoming more lax these days, my clients are wanting to add more versatile and stylish casual items into their work week rotation. So, I’m sharing a few Fall items I recommend adding to your closet this season.

#1: The 5 Pocket Pant

These are great to wear in place of your basic chino pants. The 5 pocket has the same look of a jean but the fabric is much softer than denim, usually in a brushed twill so they look dressy enough to wear to work.

#2: The Cardigan Sweater

Swap out your v-neck sweater for a cardigan style. This is a versatile layering piece you can dress up with a button down for the office or style it “a la Ryan Reynolds” over a white t-shirt on the weekend.

#3: The Chukka Boot

Also called the desert boot, this is the most versatile shoe you can add to your wardrobe. Dress them up or down, these go with pretty much everything in your closet.

#4: The Field Jacket

No more boxy car coats this season. The field jacket looks way more stylish and it’s even versatile enough to wear over your suit or blazer to the office.

#5: Bordeaux

From pants to sweaters to jackets, Bordeaux is the color of the season. Match it with blues, blacks, browns, and grays to give a bit of pop to your Fall wardrobe.

5 outdated style rules that men should now ignore

With the unofficial end of Summer and the Fall season just around the corner, I thought it’s the perfect time to review a few style rules that no longer need to be followed.

Let me start off by saying, rules are important as they are meant to guide you into dressing well and making the best first impression, but over time our priorities change and so has the need for these rules.

Here are 5 style rules that were established in the early 20th century, but no longer make much sense for the modern man.

Rule #1- Don’t wear white after Labor Day.

White looks great whatever the season, especially white bottoms. Try wearing your white jeans with a sweater and blazer or shirt and tie.

Rule #2- Always wear a belt with your pants.

Belts serve a useful purpose but if your dress pants fit properly, there is no reason you should need one.

Rule #3- Never wear black with blue or brown.

This is just an old fashion suiting rule but there is no reason why you can’t wear these colors together. Here are 2 great examples of mixing black with both blue and brown.

Rule #4- Your socks must match your pants.

Plain socks are just plain boring. Add some personality and fun into your style. Plus, women notice these kinds of details as it says to her you’re original, stylish and confident!

Rule #5- Never wear navy and black together.

Both navy and black are versatile colors. Whether dressy or casual, mixing these 2 colors together gives a more modern look.

Let me know which style ‘rule’ you’re breaking today. Comment below!

5 style ‘hacks’ for staying cool in hot weather

Hey there!

Hopefully you’re enjoying the Summer weather despite this heat wave. I actually just got back from a retreat down in Tulum, Mexico where it was over 90 degrees everyday!

Everyone was basically living in their swimsuits even at dinner and let’s face it, why the heck not? Of course that’s what you wear when you’re at the beach!

But for those of you who are not on vacation at the moment, the city heat can be brutal. So, I wanted to give you my top 5 style ‘hacks’ for dressing cooler and more comfortable in the heat without sacrificing style.

1. The Cotton Suit

Cotton fabrics keeps you cooler which is why it’s a seasonal fabric used in suiting only in the Spring and Summer months. Try swapping out your traditional wool suit for cotton instead.

2. The Linen Shirt

Linen fabrics are more breathable and more comfortable than traditional dress shirt fabrics. Try wearing more ‘Summer’ weight fabrics like linen, linen/cotton blends or even lightweight chambray.

3. The Lightweight Bottom

Your traditional khaki pants or 5 pocket styles are made with a heavier, more sturdy fabric to hold up in the Fall and Winter months so you will want to buy lighter weight styles especially for the Summer.

4. The Summer Polo

Instead of a long sleeve button down, try wearing a dressier polo option instead. Linen or cotton versions will be more breathable than your traditional pique polo style.

5. The No-Show Sock

Ditch the hot trouser sock for a no-show version instead. It not only helps you beat the heat but it looks more stylish too. Win win.

Trade up your ‘dad style’ this Father’s day

The warm weather is (finally) here and with Father’s day around the corner, I thought it only fitting I speak to all the dads out there.

When you become a father, priorities change and you may not be as focused on how you look. You most likely have your 9-5 work wear or ‘office’ uniform (as I like to call it) down but what about outside of the office?

Are you 100% happy with your wardrobe?

Often when I’m in a client’s closet, I notice how many clothes he has let linger over the years. Mostly out of habit because he didn’t want to just get rid of clothes that were perfectly fine. As long as they don’t have holes or stains they are still ‘wearable’, right?

The truth is, most of you only have a few items you actually really like or feel good in. The rest of your closet is just stuff hanging around. So, isn’t it time you traded up for fewer items that make you look and feel your best?

Swap out the deadweight items in your wardrobe for more elevated pieces that give you the cool dad factor this Summer season…

The Polo Shirt

Swap out the ‘shiny’ tucked in golf polo for a dressier, untucked fitted knit polo.

The Graphic Tee

Swap out the faded Margaritaville tee for a basic, solid color t-shirt in a higher quality fabric.

The Cargo Short

Swap out the baggy, one-too-many pocketed cargo short for a slimmer utility short instead.

The Flip Flops

Swap out the ‘beach only’ surfer Reef flip flops for a slip-on shoe with a more elevated look.

The Hawaiian Shirt

Swap out the wanna-bee Magnum P.I. style for a more subdued mini floral print.

The Sunglasses

Swap out the 80’s beach bum shades for a classic never-go-out-of style pair.

The Watch

Swap out the clunky rubber band style for a sleeker looking watch without breaking the bank.

What to wear in transitional weather

Is it Spring yet?

This season’s weather has proved to be unpredictable to say the least. Hot one day, cold the next and the hardest part is figuring out what the heck to wear.

Well, I’m going to let you in a secret…the key is to dress in layers. So, to help you maneuver this tricky weather in style, I put together 3 Looks to help you master the art of layering so you nail that look no matter what the weather is outside.

Look 1 – The Office

Mix up your suit, try switching out your suit pants with a pair of linen trousers. Layer a merino sweater over your dress shirt for a put together business look. Loafer with no show socks and a knit tie gives the office uniform a fresh, modern look. Shop the Look.

Look 2- Casual Fridays

Step up your go-to Casual Friday look by swapping out your regular blue jeans for a Spring off-white pair. Add a full zip sweater for a sharp, layered look with a lightweight Spring jacket. Shop the Look.

Look 3- Sunday Brunch

Take your Sunday style up a notch and wear a trouser with a long sleeve tee. Swap out the jacket for a vest and add a brown Chukka boot for a more trend right shoe style. Shop the Look.

9 items to instantly up your style game this Spring

Hey there, can I ask you a question?

Do you view fashion as more of a function than a form of self expression? And do you often avoid taking risks with your clothes because you’re not quite sure what looks good on you?

I ask because I speak with countless men each week about their clothing choices and what I hear most often is fashion is overwhelming and it’s easier to just buy what they know they need vs. what might be a step outside of their ‘fashion’ comfort zone.

But playing safe with your fashion choices has you fall into what I call a ‘style rut’ and you end up repeating the same look over and over again. And, the problem with that is it becomes repetitive, boring and dare I say, ‘outdated’.

Most men do want to dress better but they have no idea what looks good on them! What if you could take more risks with fashion AND make more educated decisions about what to buy for yourself?

Here’s how to step it up this season, try one of these 9 style upgrades to instantly up your style game this Spring. As for styling these items, here’s a few looks I created just for you.

Look #1- Casual Fridays

Look #2- Weekend Vibes

Look #3- After work drinks

Your Style Wing Woman,

What women really think about how you look

Want to know what women really think about how you look?

I actually know the answer to this question. How? Because I get asked it all the time!

As you may or may not know, I live in NYC and I’m constantly talking to people about what I do.

No matter where I go, the first question I get asked from guys is “How do I look?” or “What do you think about what I’m wearing?”

I know they want my opinion, not only because I’m expert in this but also because I’m a woman.

So even if it’s hard for you to admit, you too care about what women think and you probably even find yourself thinking…
“Does she think I look good?”
“Does she think I’m sexy, smart, attractive?”
“Does she think I’m her type?”

Well, if you want to know the real truth…then you need to keep reading.

Women do care about how you dress because when you look good, it shows her:

You put in the effort.
You take care of yourself.
You want to impress her.
You care about what others think.

Screen Shot 2018-03-11 at 12.01.07 PM

If you think that’s judgmental or even superficial and that women should just like you for who you are…

Let’s be honest here, you know you are judging her just as much as she is judging you.

Whether your perusing her photos on an online dating app or you’re on a first date, you’re attracted to women who look sexy, in shape, attractive and who show that they take care of themselves. Am I right?

If a woman showed up on a date with no makeup, her hair a mess in frumpy clothes then what would you be thinking?

Look, it’s human nature to judge a book by it’s cover. We all do it.

So, if you think women don’t notice or don’t care, they do. I mean, you don’t need to look like you stepped off a runway, but you do need to look like you put in an effort.

It’s time to start paying attention to this. When it comes to dating, it’s one of the easiest things you can do.

Unlike losing weight or improving your conversation skills, transforming the way you look and feel about yourself is not that hard…AND it’s something you can literally do overnight.

That’s why I call it ‘Your Secret Weapon’ and I’ve worked with countless men on this so they can improve their confidence in dating and more.

Truthfully, most of the guys I’ve worked with were completely unaware that their clothes were actually repelling women.

I don’t want this to be you too. Of course, you’ll need to know what to do. Luckily, I got your back.

Best part is once you know how to do this, it will be a game changer for you.

4 Ways to Wear a Velvet Sportcoat

Velvet is back with a vengeance this season and naturally, it’s the perfect time to wear this seasonal fabric trend! In menswear, this is a staple for evening attire especially during the Winter season.

WARNING: This may conjure up images of Hugh Hefner wearing a smoking jacket with cigar in hand.

But you don’t want to look like you’re imitating Hugh, right?! So, let’s make sure to navigate this trend carefully. From desk to dinner to date night, I’ve styled 4 ways to wear your velvet jacket during the Winter months.

Plus, Styled Sharp approved items you can shop over the Holidays while you’re sipping your favorite scotch next to a warm fireplace…Happy Holidays!

Look 1

While velvet is typically know for evening attire, try wearing it casually during the day. The key to pulling off this look is layers. Layer shirt w/tie and v-neck sweater under your jacket. Pair with sneakers (not running shoes!) for a more updated look. All items can be found here.

Look 2

Go against the all black uniform and update your Holiday party look with a light grey dress pant and cool socks (tie optional). All items can be found here.

Look 3

This is for the true trend setter. Pair your velvet with a black turtleneck and pattern dress slacks. The Chelsea boot is right on trend this season which I featured in my Fall Shoe Round Up. All items can be found here.

Look 4

Impress your special someone on date night with this look. Try a pattern dress shirt for a stylish look and pair with black Chukka boots. All items can be found here.

Stay Sharp,

P.S. Feel free to share how you like to wear your favorite velvet sportcoat during the Holiday season.
