She wants you to dress better

Is your wife or girlfriend always nagging about how you dress?

Does she often make not-so-subtle hints that you should try to look a little nicer for ‘date night’?

Has she ever taken matters into her own hands and actually thrown away clothing items from your closet (probably without you even knowing)?

Women absolutely love it when their men look good and to be completely blunt, sometimes the men in our life are just a bit clueless when it comes to fashion. And it’s not that she loves you any less because of they way you dress but when you look good, we look good together!

As a mens stylist and image consultant, the most common complaint I get from women is that their significant other dresses too ‘casual’ and getting him to upgrade his wardrobe has been like pulling teeth but they would really love it if he’d step things up a notch in the style department.

Single guys included…if you want to up your game, you have to dress the part. Dressing well increases your level of attractiveness. Now, this doesn’t mean you need to look like you just stepped off a runway, but a little fine-tuning is where I come in. So I want to offer a few of my styling tips that will impress her!

1. Fit
When it comes to improving style, fit is what really matters not so much the cost of the clothes. Men sometimes get stuck in a rut wearing the same clothes you’ve had for years! The right fit changes the whole look. Take jeans for example, you have to get used to a more updated fit. But once you start wearing the ones that actually fit, that pair will become your new favorite andyou won’t want to go back to the baggy, out-dated pair you used to wear.

2. Color
More often than not, I open a client’s closet and all I see is one drab color story. It’s definitely important that a guy has his standard grays, neutrals and blues as these are the most versatile and easiest to match up but try to throw a little color into your wardrobe mix. A brighter blue or a lighter shade of purple can make your outfit pop. Once you start getting compliments, believe me you won’t want to go back to blah!

3. Basics
There are few items that I always recommend as the foundation of any man’s wardrobe. So if you plan on buying new clothes, these are the items worth investing in:

  • Clean, dark denim jeans
  • Cotton chinos or 5 pocket pants in basic colors
  • Well-fitted, stylish blazer
  • Well-fitted dress shirts
  • White & gray v-neck t-shirts
  • Fitted polo shirts
  • Quality brown leather shoes
  • Brown leather belt to match the shoes
  • Bold pattern dress socks
  • Stylish sneakers

4. Donate

When helping a client go through his wardrobe, we talk about what’s working and what’s not. Whatever is a ‘must get rid of’, I always suggest to donate. You can also order a bag from Thredup.com and sell your items for a little extra ‘night out’ cash. Done.

Once you start wearing your updated looks, let the compliments keep rolling in!

Look sharp, spend less

Do you want to dress better but think you have to spend a ton of money?

What if I told you, you can upgrade your wardrobe and look sharp on a super tight budget? Want to know how? Keep reading…

Over the last few weeks, I’ve had several new clients looking to overhaul their Spring wardrobes on a very limited budget. Either they were looking to up-level their style completely or they wanted to upgrade to a more professional wardrobe so people would take them more seriously at work, with clients and on dates.

How I got my client a killer wardrobe on a super tight budget…

One of my first questions to my client is always “What is your budget?” Now this is where it becomes interesting because the answer determines where I can shop and how many items we can purchase. Regardless, I’m always up for the challenge!

First thing I did for my client was create a Style Profile that reflects his new image and matches his style goals. This gives a visual foundation of the actual ‘looks’ we want to focus on during our shopping trip.

IMG_2141 IMG_2142 IMG_2143

Then based on his budget, I laid out a master plan. I made a list of all the items he would need to get the most out of his new wardrobe. I always like to focus on versatile pieces that can be worn different ways so my client gets the most wear out of each item. I then found the average price of each item and chose 4-6 stores that would have these items at the prices we were looking to spend.

I then planned our shopping trip and we hit up all of the stores including brands he had never heard of. We ended up buying 20 new items (including 2 suits!) all within his super tight budget. He was impressed…so was I! Take a look at everything we bought…

IMG_1981IMG_2056

Now, comes the fun part…I then took all the newly purchased items and created 32 curated looks. Yup! He literally can go everyday of the month without wearing a single item from his old wardrobe! Afterwards, I sent him the photos along with his Style Profile so he can reference his newly customized looks anytime.

So, what happened when my client starting wearing his new looks?

The compliments started rolling in, that’s what! “Nice jacket”…. “Looking sharp”… I asked him to text me every time he gets a compliment from someone at work, on the street, anywhere. When you look good, you feel good!

And here’s what my client had to say about his style upgrade…

“Looking at the picture from before my make over, I could not believe I used to go out like that! Now I wonder what if I’ve gone to Styled Sharp sooner, how many missed opportunities could I have avoided? The list goes on and on… Now, I get to go out and enjoy my new look, new style, and new life!”

Then:                                                    Now:

7 items to clean out your closet now

It’s hard to believe March is almost over! Good news though, Spring is officially here! And with that comes the need to rotate your closet to warm weather gear. So open up your closet and ask this…are your clothes working for you or against you?

I’m challenging you to a Spring closet clean out. Not sure where to start? Don’t worry, I got you covered. I’ve devised a quick guide designed to help you get rid of the items that are just not working for you anymore.

I know: You’re busy. But trust me on this, it is worth it. Why? Because others will notice…women especially will notice!

So, are you game? Okay, let’s get started!

#1: Edit out that ill-fitting suit

suit guy fit

Gather all of your suits and blazers and check them for fit and details. Things to look for:

1.Shoulders. Note, the shoulder pads should end right at your shoulders.
2.Color. Black suits are for waiters, limo drivers, and funeral directors. If that’s not your job, then you don’t need to own one.
3.Buttons. Are there 3 buttons at the front? This style is outdated.
4.Lapel. Too wide? Same as above.
5.Pants. Are they pleated? No explanation necessary.

Here’s a tip on fit…since the shoulders are the hardest to tailor, make sure they don’t stick up or out. If so, the jacket has to go. Chest or waist too big? Sleeves too long? Good news, these can be altered.

#2: Let go of at least three pairs of outdated jeans

Screen shot 2015-03-26 at 10.38.35 PMScreen shot 2015-03-26 at 10.34.47 PMScreen shot 2015-03-26 at 10.41.56 PM
Open up your denim drawer and ask yourself, how long have those jeans been hiding in there? Inspect them for the following:
-unnatural distressing (light color areas or streaks)
-contrast stitching on pockets
-baggy in the leg or rear
-frayed bottoms or boot cut
-‘dad’ jean stonewash

If most of your jeans meet any of the above criteria, it’s time for a denim overhaul. Please contact me ASAP!

#3: Shoes…ditch the pair that’s beyond repair

Screen shot 2016-03-25 at 4.45.12 PM
Take a good look at your shoe collection and pull out any that have visible scuffs or scrapes. Take them to your local shoe repair guy to have them buffed up. They will look brand spankin’ (well, almost) new again!

#4: Old t-shirts, save no more than 12 max

Screen shot 2016-03-25 at 4.48.09 PM
Check for stains, holes or discoloration and then turn them into reusable rags for cleaning up your space. As for graphic tees…the ones with the funny sayings. There’s really no need for them. Unless you want to look like you’re still in college, leave ’em for the Hipsters. I recommend donating them to your local Beacon’s closet.

#5: Get rid of any shirt with busted collars

Screen shot 2016-03-26 at 10.50.46 AMScreen shot 2016-03-26 at 10.52.50 AM
Check the collar for both shape and discoloration around the edges. do you really want your co-workers…or better yet your date staring at your misshapen, worn down collar? You only get one chance to make that first impression. Also, puckering on the collar means the interlining (material on the inside that gives the collar stability) is shot. Even a tailor can’t fix this.

#6: Edit out at least one stretched out or overly-pilled sweater before folding down the rest

Screen shot 2016-03-25 at 5.02.35 PMScreen shot 2016-03-25 at 5.39.24 PM

Fold, DO NOT…I repeat DO NOT hang your sweaters like do with your dress shirts. Knits stretch out over time. They lose their shape and cause those annoying hanger dimples at the shoulders. Once the fabric is too stretched out, it’s not fixable. Also, check for pilling (small tangles of fabric that naturally come loose where the garment is rubbed the most).

#7: Edit out at least 3 hideous and off-putting ties

Screen shot 2016-03-26 at 9.44.34 AMScreen shot 2016-03-26 at 9.32.21 AM

If your tie isn’t looking up to date, it should be destroyed. Yup! Give it up. Today’s tie widths are narrower but tie patterns are still somewhat conservative. If the pattern looks like its straight out of 1995 (yes, that was 20 years ago!), its time to donate.

Were any of these challenges too daunting? Have you been thinking about hiring a personal stylist? Just shoot me an email and we’ll get it set up.

I look forward to working with you! Drop me a line here.

What your date wants you to wear

Valentine’s Day is fast approaching so whether you fit into the one-quarter of the men out there who admit that they celebrate the holiday out of obligation or you’re a true bachelor hoping to get ‘lucky’…your date deserves a whole lot more than showing up with some flowers from the bodega around the corner. You see, we ladies, have expectations of men on a date…gentlemanly qualities like opening doors, chivalry and romance go a long way but I know you know these by now. How you show up to your date is just as important, if not more important. Don’t forget that good style and grooming matter to us, too!

Screen shot 2016-02-10 at 10.08.54 PMScreen shot 2016-02-10 at 10.15.16 PM

Dress it up with a jacket. Note, the right fit makes all the difference. Is the shoulder sitting in the right place? Are the sleeves too long? Women are very observant and notice every little detail. She has a mental checklist even if she doesn’t realize it but make no mistake; she’s ticking off the boxes…check, check!

The V-neck sweater is a great way to dress up your dark denim jeans or even add a bit of color to your look. Take note of these guys as both sweaters fit impeccably well with no excess fabric at the waist.

Screen shot 2016-02-10 at 10.06.52 PM Screen shot 2016-02-10 at 9.56.35 PM

Layer it. Start from the bottom up with a great pair of flat front pants or slim fit jeans. Top it off with a pull over sweater and cool leather jacket or a stylish button down & blazer combo.

So before you choose what to wear, ask yourself…is your clothing working for you or against you? Is your fit, color and style on point? These details matter and a little effort makes all the difference to her. So while you’re racking your brain over which restaurant to pick and what flowers she will like best, I want to help you show up looking to impress. From dressed-up to dressed-down to somewhere-in-between, depending on how serious things are, use these tips to put yourself together for the big evening — Your style wing woman’s got you covered.

And of course if you need my help picking out your date attire or any other style advice, you can drop me a line here.

I look forward to hearing from you!

‘Reboot’ your closet

Do you actually wear that?

January has finally kicked in this blistery winter chill and it’s just too damn cold to venture outside without at least 5 layers on. I’m challenging you to stay inside with some hot cider (make mine spiked) and answer the dreaded question, “What’s in your closet?” Who knows, maybe you will even find some extra cash you stashed in your pants’ pocket months ago!

No, but really…when is the last time you actually took a look at what is hiding in there? Do you have a jacket that’s too tight or too loose? (Neither of which are very flattering.)  Shirts with too much fabric at the waist? (Let’s fix that!) How about a hand-me-down a relative gave you that doesn’t even fit but you felt obliged to keep? Or worse… do you have clothes from the 90’s still hanging around?!

IMG_1784IMG_1044

How I helped my client save money with his wardrobe…

We took a look in his closet and found that he had too many pieces in the same color, making him look washed out. He had multiple suits, many of them outdated that were making him look both old-fashioned and older than he is. Worst of all, the fit was off; his clothes were swimming on him!

Once we went through it all (about 2 hours later), we discussed what to keep, tailor, donate and most importantly what made him look great. I then took those items and created about 30 customized looks using his current wardrobe!

That’s 30 times he can go without having another person say “Didn’t you wear that the last time I saw you?” All put together from his own closet!

Afterwards I sent him a bunch of photos in a digital file so he can reference his newly customized looks anytime. I also sent a series of links to items he can add to his wardrobe that are cost-effective and compliment his current wardrobe.

The whole experience was like Extreme Home Makeover but for one’s wardrobe and best part, you don’t have to win a makeover on a talk show to be able to afford it.

Dating style checklist

1. Dress Up.

Your date will size you up so put in the effort to look your best. You can’t go wrong with a stylish blazer and fitted button down tucked into slim straight, dark wash jeans. This will for sure impress your date.

 2. Best foot forward.

Yes, it still is the first thing women notice. Do your shoes look scuffed up or worn-down? Take them them to your shoe guy for a quick fix or else she’ll think you don’t care about your appearance.

3. Up-keep.

Any facial hair should be well-groomed. It’s like brushing your teeth, don’t leave home without doing both these things.

4. Maintenance check.

Think she won’t notice? She will. Women love a man that cares about his appearance. Make sure to do a spot check before heading out the door.

5. Don’t forget the flowers.

Believe me, even if a woman says she doesn’t want them. Its makes an impression and it’s always the first thing she brags about to her friends the next day.

Are quality shirts worth the price?

Screen shot 2015-01-12 at 11.55.13 PM Screen shot 2015-01-12 at 11.58.57 PM

Which shirt is more expensive? Its hard to tell, right?

The shirt is a staple in any man’s wardrobe with endless options out there to choose from. So you might be wondering, why are some more expensive than others?

Well, as a designer I can say I designed my fair share of men’s shirts and ideally, I would have loved to choose the best quality cottons in the highest thread counts, but reality is the brands (don’t want to put them on blast) I worked for made me use cheaper qualities due to price. The hard truth…shirts from less expensive brands may look cool but more than likely they are made of poor qualities or even made with polyester blends in order to sell at cheaper prices and often sacrificing the quality.

Take Charmin, for example. Why do the cheaper toilet paper brands tear and break apart so easily? You always end up using way more than a few sheets and before you know it, the roll is out! Charmin Ultra Strong is more expensive, yes, but way more durable and last longer than the cheap stuff so it makes spending those few extra cents all worth it.

So bottom line, quality is key…spend a little more to get more out of your investment. Seriously, putting on a crisp, well-made shirt that fits perfectly makes you look like a million bucks.

Sharp tip: If the fabric feels rough to the touch and wrinkles fairly easily then it probably won’t last more than a few times in the wash. Trust me when I say, save up your dollars for the good stuff! If you follow the proper care instructions, you won’t have to keep replacing your shirts every season.

Your turn guys. What’s your go-to brand for quality shirts? Leave your personal pick and why you like it so much in the comments below.

New year, new look

Have you started on your 2015 goals yet? Are your New Year’s resolutions sounding a lot like last year’s? I want to make more money, workout more, be clutter free, stress less…and so on. 2014 came and went and you’re looking at the same old story. In a world of seemingly endless resolutions, try picking one that you can really stick to. To set out on the path to success, invest in a new you! Updating your look can make all the difference in helping you achieve your goals. Here’s why:

1.Make an impression

Think people don’t care about how you look? Well, you’re wrong. Research proves our appearance significantly affects people’s perceptions of us. In fact, studies have found that nonverbal cues have over four times the impact on the impression you make than anything you say.

2.Make more money

Yup, that’s right. People believe what they see. If people think you look successful, in their eyes you are successful. For that reason, they want to be associated with you which means they trust you. So bottom line is…when you dress better, you attract more clients and in return, rake in the dough!

3. More confidence

Confidence gives off the impression of professionalism and success. When you look good, you feel good and you have the confidence to go after what you really want to achieve this year. Period.

4.Get dateable

Guys, here’s an insider tip into the female mind…we think dressing well makes a man look more attractive. So much so, most women wouldn’t even give you a second date if you showed up on your first one not looking your best. About 78 percent of women think that one of the sexiest things a man can do is dress well. So why not let your clothes help you out in this department?

5.Close the deal

Whether its a potential client or investor you want to sign on, that promotion at work, or the date of your dreams, your style could make all the difference. People make major decisions about one another within the first seven seconds of meeting. While you can’t stop people from making snap decisions, you can make a great first impression by dressing sharp.

I’m not saying you need to change. You’re great the way you are! But why not try a brand new you? THIS year could be the one that actually gets you to where you want to be— So, take a decisive step forward to update your look.

It’s 2015, and its my intention to help you achieve your style goals. So get ready for your best year yet.

Hello December!

So here it is again, ’tis the season! Holiday parties are aplenty and you might be wondering…what the heck are you going to wear?

Whether it’s schmoozing with the higher-ups at the annual office bash or looking for a date to kiss when the ball drops on NYE, it’s time to step it up. Get noticed. I’ve suggested four simple ideas for you to stand out this holiday season.

Screen shot 2014-12-08 at 11.58.11 AMScreen shot 2014-12-08 at 12.02.08 PMScreen shot 2014-12-08 at 12.12.01 PM

A great looking tux never goes out of style; always classic and great for a formal event. So if you don’t own a tux, its time to invest in one. If you already have one hanging in your closet, great! Time to ask yourself, how many years have I owned this? Does it still fit me? Take it to your tailor to make sure the fit is perfect. Would Daniel Craig be able to pull this look off if the fit was bad? Remember guys, fit is key here. If you get that right, the ladies will take notice. Trust me.

Okay so, you probably have a less formal event or possibly you just don’t want to be seen wearing the same tux to every single party. Good news: you can get multiple uses out of it! Try throwing the jacket over a fitted v-neck for a sophisticated black-on-black look. Or simply wear the pants with a solid button down shirt. White looks great and you can also try a navy option for a more modern look. Black Derby’s for the feet will polish it all off!

Screen shot 2014-12-08 at 12.44.33 PMScreen shot 2014-12-08 at 12.45.25 PM

In all my years of designing menswear, the holiday season was the only time where some shine was appropriate. So I say, have some fun with it and get a bit more festive this year! If you really want to grab the crowd’s attention, try a jacquard-style jacket like this one from Hugo Boss. The subtle detailson the lapel takes it up a notch. Layer it with a crisp, black button down, black dress pants and black belt. Done! If too much shine is not your thing, a great alternative is a sateen button down shirt with a hidden placket. This has a subtle sheen and looks great under any festive blazer or suit jacket.

Screen shot 2014-12-08 at 12.45.38 PM Screen shot 2014-12-08 at 12.47.59 PM

Ahhh velvet…plush and luxurious. Its the all-time favorite fabric for the holiday season and this year is no different. I especially love this one from Reiss in a bit of color. Looks great with the contrast lapel and black pants. I would also suggest wearing it with a clean, black jean if you want to play it down a bit. Another great way to wear velvet is to try it in a pant instead. This one looks updated and can be worn with a well-tailored, crisp button down shirt and dress shoe.

Screen shot 2014-12-08 at 12.46.35 PMScreen shot 2014-12-08 at 2.01.58 PMScreen shot 2014-12-08 at 2.14.36 PM

Its all in the details. You can try more subtle options that will still get you noticed. This is my take on the vest look. It needs to be slim and worn with a fitted dress shirt. Try it over a color block plaid shirt for a more fashionable look. Another way to add some subtle flare is with a bow tie. So many options out there these days so you can definitely find one at the thetieBar.com that suits your personality. And to top it all off, make sure to wear the appropriate coat. It must be well tailored and long enough to cover your blazer or sportcoat. This is a must: the right coat will last you many more winters to come!

So, why not try a more festive look this year? Get into the holiday spirit with some of these more updated party looks and try not to gloat too much when the compliments come flying your way….

Were these tips helpful? Tell me what you end up wearing this holiday season!
