Ready to update your Fall Style?

Whether it be holiday party season or you just really want to update your weekend basics, Styled Sharp has you covered…literally! We all have to get dressed everyday, might as well look and feel great doing it.

Let’s talk!

Summer is just heating up

Fall may be just around the corner, but beach season is not over yet!

To help you beat the heat in style, we put together our top 10 Style Tips for staying cool while looking Sharp to take you all the way through Labor Day.

Unless you’re in a relatively conservative professional setting, socks are optional during the Summer months. Sneakers, Loafers, even a pair of Derbies all look great with a bit of ankle showing. Pick up some ‘no-show’ socks to protect your feet from the heat.

Regardless of whether it’s a Summer wedding or simply an important work meeting, when you have to wear a suit, stick with something in a lighter weight fabric like a Summer-weight wool, cotton, or linen. You’ll be more comfortable during those sweltering days.

This is a Summer staple. You can dress it up for special events, dress it down for a casual date night, or dress it way down for some day drinking on the boardwalk or a rooftop bar. It’s one of the most versatile, stylish, and comfortable pieces you can own.

A cap or a Fedora hat is a great look for Summer. Whether you’re at the beach, on a boat, or walking, a hat will keep your look more cool and stylish and at the same time, it protects your face from the sun.

Most of the time, you’re not going to need a jacket during the Spring and Summer. But for those rare few occasions, a lightweight windbreaker is your move. Whether you’re at the beach, at the pier or leaving the office late evenings can occasionally get chilly.

Shades or accessories will often up your wardrobe from a 5 to a 10 immediately. You have to protect your eyes from the sun anyway so why not be stylish about it. Also shades help create two different ‘looks’ by something as small as having them off or on!

Whether you’re headed to Hamptons or an island getaway this Summer, don’t be afraid to add some festivity to your swimwear. This is one item where you can be as loud as you want to be.

When you’re at the beach, obviously you want footwear that’s easy to get on and off. And while flip-flops certainly get the job done (on the beach) a pair of canvas espadrilles will do it with considerably more style.

Have one weekender or small toiletry bag that you can carry all your essentials in for when you want to freshen up on the go or weekend trip.

Stay clean shaven or your beard shaped up. A fresh, tapered look in the Summer allows you to be cooler and compliments your wardrobe better. Plus more ladies are out in the Summertime! And most importantly, don’t forget to moisturize your skin to keep it healthy and hydrated this season.

Finally, a shirt that fits?

It’s that time of year again! The holiday season is here and you know what that means…lots and lots of shopping deals!

Now while I love helping my clients find great deals, I do want to warn you not to be too enamored by the thought that you are getting a good ‘deal’ just because it appears to be super discounted. More often than not, we get caught up in buying stuff just because it’s ‘on sale’.

Here’s the thing, big retailers plan these markdowns over a year in advance. Of course, they have to…this is the time of year with the highest sell thru’s so they want to capitalize on the holiday selling season and beat their end of year sales plans.

When I was designing clothes for one of those big name retailers (hint: the one with a famous Thanksgiving parade every year), we would plan and design product that we can offer at a discount so the customer felt they were getting a great deal.

Take Charles Tyrwhitt for example, a name I hear frequently from my clients. This brand is great at marketing the ‘deal’. Like I said, nothing wrong with getting a great deal but I do want to point out that even though they pride themselves on being an English brand, the shirts themselves are not actually made in England. In order to hit a certain price point, they must outsource to a lower cost manufacturer in Asia. And this unfortunately means it’s not built to last.

Make no mistake, sales are great but I have found most guys get completely mesmerized by thinking they are getting a great deal and before they know it, they’ve racked up a bunch of not-so-great quality clothes in their closets.

So, before you get too caught up in the cyber madness and spend all your hard earned cash let’s talk about what you should be investing in.

A few weeks ago, I spoke to you about Pants and how to look for the right fit. Today, I want to talk about Shirts. Whether casual or dressy, shirts are a staple in every man’s wardrobe. There are so many options out there and often I get the question from clients on what to look for when looking for a quality shirt.

So, I want to point out 3 things to look out for when looking for a shirt you want to own for awhile.

1. Fabric quality. Most mass produced brands use shirt fabrics which are sourced in China. The problem with that, it’s not great quality. Sure, it might say 100/2’s or 2 ply yarns but what about the actual quality of the yarn itself? Italian, English or Egyptian cottons are all considered the highest quality because of the length, strength and softness of the yarns.

Let me ask, do you prefer to sleep on sheets with the highest thread count or do you want to sleep in rough, low quality bed sheets? Which sounds more comfortable to you? Essentially, that’s exactly what you’re wearing against your skin everyday when you don’t invest in good quality shirts.

2. The ‘make’ of the garment. This refers to the way it’s constructed. The sewing, the stitches per inch, the buttons, the fusible in the collar & cuff and the finishing on the seams. Hand crafted, quality shirts are constructed with attention to detail.

So, again don’t be too enticed by the deal. A cheap shirt is just that. It’s meant to be replaced season after season. And that means spending more money. So you definitely get what you pay for, my friend.

3. Fit. Standard sizing is exactly what it sounds like. Off the rack sizing is S/M/L/XL and dress shirts are sized by neck and arm length. When I designed men’s shirts, we always fit on a fit model and we based all the other sizes on this one guy. This is why men can’t seem to find the right size for their body type. Because not all guys are created equal. We are not one size fits all.

This is the reason why I recommend Stantt shirts to all my clients. They have created an algorithm designed to help guys find the perfect fitting shirt. They offer 75 sizes! Yes, 75 and the best part is you only need to provide 3 measurements. And with that many sizes to choose from, you’re bound to find a fit that works a whole lot better than the sorta-kinda-fit you already own.

Good news!

Stantt is rewarding YOU with an exclusive Styled Sharp discount so you can shop their shirt collection online. Just email me directly to get this exclusive discount code. Happy Holiday shopping!

P.S. Need some style advice on what to update in your wardrobe this Winter season?

No problem, just drop me a line here and let’s talk!

I look forward to working with you!

Size doesn’t matter…

Size doesn’t matter? Say what?!

Yeah, that’s right. What really matters is the Fit of your clothes.

And it’s more important to wear the right fit for your body type.

What do I mean by that? Well, you can wear the right size pant but there are different cuts depending on your body type.

So even if you’re wearing the right size in the waist (most guys wear 1-2 sizes too big, by the way), it might not fit throughout the leg or there might be too much fabric from the top of the pant to the bottom on the fly.

This makes you appear bigger than you are. Who wants that?!

Excess fabric is the death of style. You can definitely spend money on higher quality, stylish clothing but if the fit is off, it just doesn’t matter.

You can actually spend less money and look like a million bucks if you buy clothes that fit properly!

So maybe you’re thinking, ‘why does Fit matter so much?’

Because first impressions matter…and it all starts with how you’re dressed the first time you meet someone. This means, take a bit more time to press your clothes, wear clothes that fit your body type, choose colors that compliment your skin or hair color, and avoid worn or scuffed shoes. This will communicate confidence and command the attention of everyone in the room.

I just want to share a quick story about a client of mine…

Before Sunny came to me, he thought he was wearing the right size when in fact most of his clothes were the wrong fit. He wore clothes that were too baggy because he didn’t know what size he was or what brands would work best for his body type.

He was completely unaware until a female friend of his pointed it out. As a result of him not knowing….women weren’t taking him seriously.

So he wasn’t getting dates which caused him to constantly wonder, what the heck was missing?! He felt completely powerless and felt like giving up on dating all together.

But, After working with me, I explained the difference between size and fit.

He started wearing his new Fit and noticed he started getting looks which led to non-stop compliments from everyone wherever he went. Both men and women were complimenting him on how he looked.

He became more approachable….women were coming up to him and striking up conversations. He even got numbers from 2 different women in the same night!

BONUS! Even his boss and coworkers noticed he was showing up differently which allowed him to be taken more seriously at work.

Quote from my client…

“Looking back, style was the last thing I thought that was holding me back. I can’t believe I was that guy. I now make an impact when I walk into the room and get treated as a priority. I feel invincible.” -Sunny

She wants you to dress better

Is your wife or girlfriend always nagging about how you dress?

Does she often make not-so-subtle hints that you should try to look a little nicer for ‘date night’?

Has she ever taken matters into her own hands and actually thrown away clothing items from your closet (probably without you even knowing)?

Women absolutely love it when their men look good and to be completely blunt, sometimes the men in our life are just a bit clueless when it comes to fashion. And it’s not that she loves you any less because of they way you dress but when you look good, we look good together!

As a mens stylist and image consultant, the most common complaint I get from women is that their significant other dresses too ‘casual’ and getting him to upgrade his wardrobe has been like pulling teeth but they would really love it if he’d step things up a notch in the style department.

Single guys included…if you want to up your game, you have to dress the part. Dressing well increases your level of attractiveness. Now, this doesn’t mean you need to look like you just stepped off a runway, but a little fine-tuning is where I come in. So I want to offer a few of my styling tips that will impress her!

1. Fit
When it comes to improving style, fit is what really matters not so much the cost of the clothes. Men sometimes get stuck in a rut wearing the same clothes you’ve had for years! The right fit changes the whole look. Take jeans for example, you have to get used to a more updated fit. But once you start wearing the ones that actually fit, that pair will become your new favorite andyou won’t want to go back to the baggy, out-dated pair you used to wear.

2. Color
More often than not, I open a client’s closet and all I see is one drab color story. It’s definitely important that a guy has his standard grays, neutrals and blues as these are the most versatile and easiest to match up but try to throw a little color into your wardrobe mix. A brighter blue or a lighter shade of purple can make your outfit pop. Once you start getting compliments, believe me you won’t want to go back to blah!

3. Basics
There are few items that I always recommend as the foundation of any man’s wardrobe. So if you plan on buying new clothes, these are the items worth investing in:

  • Clean, dark denim jeans
  • Cotton chinos or 5 pocket pants in basic colors
  • Well-fitted, stylish blazer
  • Well-fitted dress shirts
  • White & gray v-neck t-shirts
  • Fitted polo shirts
  • Quality brown leather shoes
  • Brown leather belt to match the shoes
  • Bold pattern dress socks
  • Stylish sneakers

4. Donate

When helping a client go through his wardrobe, we talk about what’s working and what’s not. Whatever is a ‘must get rid of’, I always suggest to donate. You can also order a bag from Thredup.com and sell your items for a little extra ‘night out’ cash. Done.

Once you start wearing your updated looks, let the compliments keep rolling in!

Look sharp, spend less

Do you want to dress better but think you have to spend a ton of money?

What if I told you, you can upgrade your wardrobe and look sharp on a super tight budget? Want to know how? Keep reading…

Over the last few weeks, I’ve had several new clients looking to overhaul their Spring wardrobes on a very limited budget. Either they were looking to up-level their style completely or they wanted to upgrade to a more professional wardrobe so people would take them more seriously at work, with clients and on dates.

How I got my client a killer wardrobe on a super tight budget…

One of my first questions to my client is always “What is your budget?” Now this is where it becomes interesting because the answer determines where I can shop and how many items we can purchase. Regardless, I’m always up for the challenge!

First thing I did for my client was create a Style Profile that reflects his new image and matches his style goals. This gives a visual foundation of the actual ‘looks’ we want to focus on during our shopping trip.

IMG_2141 IMG_2142 IMG_2143

Then based on his budget, I laid out a master plan. I made a list of all the items he would need to get the most out of his new wardrobe. I always like to focus on versatile pieces that can be worn different ways so my client gets the most wear out of each item. I then found the average price of each item and chose 4-6 stores that would have these items at the prices we were looking to spend.

I then planned our shopping trip and we hit up all of the stores including brands he had never heard of. We ended up buying 20 new items (including 2 suits!) all within his super tight budget. He was impressed…so was I! Take a look at everything we bought…

Now, comes the fun part…I then took all the newly purchased items and created 32 curated looks. Yup! He literally can go everyday of the month without wearing a single item from his old wardrobe! Afterwards, I sent him the photos along with his Style Profile so he can reference his newly customized looks anytime.

So, what happened when my client starting wearing his new looks?

The compliments started rolling in, that’s what! “Nice jacket”…. “Looking sharp”… I asked him to text me every time he gets a compliment from someone at work, on the street, anywhere. When you look good, you feel good!

And here’s what my client had to say about his style upgrade…

“Looking at the picture from before my make over, I could not believe I used to go out like that! Now I wonder what if I’ve gone to Styled Sharp sooner, how many missed opportunities could I have avoided? The list goes on and on… Now, I get to go out and enjoy my new look, new style, and new life!”

Then:                                                    Now:

If you think it’s finally time to invest in yourself and get more of what you want, just drop me a line here. I look forward to working with you!

7 items to clean out your closet now

It’s hard to believe March is almost over! Good news though, Spring is officially here! And with that comes the need to rotate your closet to warm weather gear. So open up your closet and ask this…are your clothes working for you or against you?

I’m challenging you to a Spring closet clean out. Not sure where to start? Don’t worry, I got you covered. I’ve devised a quick guide designed to help you get rid of the items that are just not working for you anymore.

I know: You’re busy. But trust me on this, it is worth it. Why? Because others will notice…women especially will notice!

So, are you game? Okay, let’s get started!

#1: Edit out that ill-fitting suit

suit guy fit

Gather all of your suits and blazers and check them for fit and details. Things to look for:

1.Shoulders. Note, the shoulder pads should end right at your shoulders.
2.Color. Black suits are for waiters, limo drivers, and funeral directors. If that’s not your job, then you don’t need to own one.
3.Buttons. Are there 3 buttons at the front? This style is outdated.
4.Lapel. Too wide? Same as above.
5.Pants. Are they pleated? No explanation necessary.

Here’s a tip on fit…since the shoulders are the hardest to tailor, make sure they don’t stick up or out. If so, the jacket has to go. Chest or waist too big? Sleeves too long? Good news, these can be altered.

#2: Let go of at least three pairs of outdated jeans

Screen shot 2015-03-26 at 10.38.35 PMScreen shot 2015-03-26 at 10.34.47 PMScreen shot 2015-03-26 at 10.41.56 PM
Open up your denim drawer and ask yourself, how long have those jeans been hiding in there? Inspect them for the following:
-unnatural distressing (light color areas or streaks)
-contrast stitching on pockets
-baggy in the leg or rear
-frayed bottoms or boot cut
-‘dad’ jean stonewash

If most of your jeans meet any of the above criteria, it’s time for a denim overhaul. Please contact me ASAP!

#3: Shoes…ditch the pair that’s beyond repair

Screen shot 2016-03-25 at 4.45.12 PM
Take a good look at your shoe collection and pull out any that have visible scuffs or scrapes. Take them to your local shoe repair guy to have them buffed up. They will look brand spankin’ (well, almost) new again!

#4: Old t-shirts, save no more than 12 max

Screen shot 2016-03-25 at 4.48.09 PM
Check for stains, holes or discoloration and then turn them into reusable rags for cleaning up your space. As for graphic tees…the ones with the funny sayings. There’s really no need for them. Unless you want to look like you’re still in college, leave ’em for the Hipsters. I recommend donating them to your local Beacon’s closet.

#5: Get rid of any shirt with busted collars

Screen shot 2016-03-26 at 10.50.46 AMScreen shot 2016-03-26 at 10.52.50 AM
Check the collar for both shape and discoloration around the edges. do you really want your co-workers…or better yet your date staring at your misshapen, worn down collar? You only get one chance to make that first impression. Also, puckering on the collar means the interlining (material on the inside that gives the collar stability) is shot. Even a tailor can’t fix this.

#6: Edit out at least one stretched out or overly-pilled sweater before folding down the rest

Screen shot 2016-03-25 at 5.02.35 PMScreen shot 2016-03-25 at 5.39.24 PM

Fold, DO NOT…I repeat DO NOT hang your sweaters like do with your dress shirts. Knits stretch out over time. They lose their shape and cause those annoying hanger dimples at the shoulders. Once the fabric is too stretched out, it’s not fixable. Also, check for pilling (small tangles of fabric that naturally come loose where the garment is rubbed the most).

#7: Edit out at least 3 hideous and off-putting ties

Screen shot 2016-03-26 at 9.44.34 AMScreen shot 2016-03-26 at 9.32.21 AM

If your tie isn’t looking up to date, it should be destroyed. Yup! Give it up. Today’s tie widths are narrower but tie patterns are still somewhat conservative. If the pattern looks like its straight out of 1995 (yes, that was 20 years ago!), its time to donate.

Were any of these challenges too daunting? Have you been thinking about hiring a personal stylist? Just shoot me an email and we’ll get it set up.

I look forward to working with you! Drop me a line here.
Your Style Wing Woman,
Tavia Sharp

What your date wants you to wear

Valentine’s Day is fast approaching so whether you fit into the one-quarter of the men out there who admit that they celebrate the holiday out of obligation or you’re a true bachelor hoping to get ‘lucky’…your date deserves a whole lot more than showing up with some flowers from the bodega around the corner. You see, we ladies, have expectations of men on a date…gentlemanly qualities like opening doors, chivalry and romance go a long way but I know you know these by now. How you show up to your date is just as important, if not more important. Don’t forget that good style and grooming matter to us, too!

Screen shot 2016-02-10 at 10.08.54 PMScreen shot 2016-02-10 at 10.15.16 PM

Dress it up with a jacket. Note, the right fit makes all the difference. Is the shoulder sitting in the right place? Are the sleeves too long? Women are very observant and notice every little detail. She has a mental checklist even if she doesn’t realize it but make no mistake; she’s ticking off the boxes…check, check!

Screen shot 2016-02-10 at 10.06.05 PM Screen shot 2016-02-10 at 10.07.39 PM

The V-neck sweater is a great way to dress up your dark denim jeans or even add a bit of color to your look. Take note of these guys as both sweaters fit impeccably well with no excess fabric at the waist.

Screen shot 2016-02-10 at 10.06.52 PM Screen shot 2016-02-10 at 9.56.35 PM

Layer it. Start from the bottom up with a great pair of flat front pants or slim fit jeans. Top it off with a pull over sweater and cool leather jacket or a stylish button down & blazer combo.

So before you choose what to wear, ask yourself…is your clothing working for you or against you? Is your fit, color and style on point? These details matter and a little effort makes all the difference to her. So while you’re racking your brain over which restaurant to pick and what flowers she will like best, I want to help you show up looking to impress. From dressed-up to dressed-down to somewhere-in-between, depending on how serious things are, use these tips to put yourself together for the big evening — Your style wing woman’s got you covered.

And of course if you need my help picking out your date attire or any other style advice, you can drop me a line here.

I look forward to hearing from you!

Tavia Sharp

‘Reboot’ your closet

Do you actually wear that?

January has finally kicked in this blistery winter chill and it’s just too damn cold to venture outside without at least 5 layers on. I’m challenging you to stay inside with some hot cider (make mine spiked) and answer the dreaded question, “What’s in your closet?” Who knows, maybe you will even find some extra cash you stashed in your pants’ pocket months ago!

No, but really…when is the last time you actually took a look at what is hiding in there? Do you have a jacket that’s too tight or too loose? (Neither of which are very flattering.)  Shirts with too much fabric at the waist? (Let’s fix that!) How about a hand-me-down a relative gave you that doesn’t even fit but you felt obliged to keep? Or worse… do you have clothes from the 90’s still hanging around?!

How I helped my client save money with his wardrobe…

We took a look in his closet and found that he had too many pieces in the same color, making him look washed out. He had multiple suits, many of them outdated that were making him look both old-fashioned and older than he is. Worst of all, the fit was off; his clothes were swimming on him!

Once we went through it all (about 2 hours later), we discussed what to keep, tailor, donate and most importantly what made him look great. I then took those items and created about 30 customized looks using his current wardrobe!

That’s 30 times he can go without having another person say “Didn’t you wear that the last time I saw you?” All put together from his own closet!

Afterwards I sent him a bunch of photos in a digital file so he can reference his newly customized looks anytime. I also sent a series of links to items he can add to his wardrobe that are cost-effective and compliment his current wardrobe.

The whole experience was like Extreme Home Makeover but for one’s wardrobe and best part, you don’t have to win a makeover on a talk show to be able to afford it.

If you think it’s time to ‘reboot’ your wardrobe, just shoot me an email and we’ll get it set up.

I look forward to working with you! Drop me a line here.

Yours truly,

Tavia Sharp

1. Dress Up.

Your date will size you up so put in the effort to look your best. You can’t go wrong with a stylish blazer and fitted button down tucked into slim straight, dark wash jeans. This will for sure impress your date.

 2. Best foot forward.

Yes, it still is the first thing women notice. Do your shoes look scuffed up or worn-down? Take them them to your shoe guy for a quick fix or else she’ll think you don’t care about your appearance.

3. Up-keep.

Any facial hair should be well-groomed. It’s like brushing your teeth, don’t leave home without doing both these things.

4. Maintenance check.

Think she won’t notice? She will. Women love a man that cares about his appearance. Make sure to do a spot check before heading out the door.

5. Don’t forget the flowers.

Believe me, even if a woman says she doesn’t want them. Its makes an impression and it’s always the first thing she brags about to her friends the next day.
